During the mid-nineteenth century as the American Frontier made its expanse westward to the Pacific, the common inspirational thread shared by many of the explorers and settlers was the belief they were destined and empowered by Divine Providence to prevail over the Indigenous Indians and ultimately overspread and possess all the land of North America. “Manifest Destiny,” the historical term for this belief, enhanced the settlers’ determination and confidence in their westward pursuit.
